By reframing problems into opportunities, the "How might we" (HMW) approach fosters a mindset that is both user-centric and solution-oriented. It is a a collaborative ideation technique used to approach problems with an open and curious mindset, typically by reframing challenges into opportunities for innovation. The "How Might We" Questions template is designed to facilitate this process, providing structure and tools that encourage collaborative ideation.

A user or team decides to initiate a HMW session because they face a complex problem or challenge for which they need creative solutions. The exercise begins with writing a problem statement to use as the basis for reframing the issue. Collaborators are invited to reframe the problem in new ways, beginning with the question, "How might we...?"

Participants should:

  • Use extreme words like "eliminate," "instant," "beloved," or "flawless."

  • Introduce emotions like pride, frustration, apathy, sadness, or joy.

  • Phrase questions in bold, interesting, and provocative ways.

  • Avoid embedding a solution into the question.

  • Avoid dull and uninspiring questions.

When finished, you can can select a handful of standout questions and use them to brainstorm new ideas.
